Upstream spider. Partridge and Yellow

North country spiders should be dressed in two ways.
The standard seen way is with the hackle sloping backwards for down stream work. A fly dressed like this looks more like a nymph it should be longer than the hook to represent the tails of the insect.I mostly fish these flies downstream as a way to cover large areas of water when no surface actively is present.

The other way to dress north country spiders is called with kick, the hackles are in a vertical plane,or even slightly forward for upstream work. A fly dressed with kick will give a good entry into the water and will get to work very quickly. The spider when fished upstream represents an emerging insect or an adult fly which has became waterlogged in the stream flow.
Upstream spiders work best when fish are seen to be taking flies in or around the surface film.

These techniques have been around for hundreds of years and are tried and tested.
Give them a go.
